View Entire PostFlashback to late 2008. Digital has completely obliterated 35mm sales. Kodak, Fuji, and Ilford are about to shut down their film processing lines and go under. Digital SLR owners worldwide cheer in a unified rejoice as they drink the blood from the severed heads of film photographers in the jubilee that followed once they've finally [...]

View Entire PostI love going to antique stores. I always go with high hopes of finding a hidden gem of a piece of hardware tucked away somewhere, but always end up just finding endless shelfs of Kodak folders and Argus C3's. I also love them since about 95% of the photos I own in my collection come [...]
View Entire PostStrange but true. Yesterday I was walking home from work and had my M3 ready in my right hand. Someone I passed asked me if I holding a German Luger.
Lets compare the two real quick shall we?

This weekend I set up my darkroom in the basement of the place that I moved into in September. I spent the past few hours cranking out random 5x7 prints from my archive of 35mm shooting. Seeing these images on paper, some of which are four years old, is like cracking open a fine bottle [...]
View Entire PostSo I have the temporary use of a nice old Leica M3. Today I vowed that when I woke up, that I was going to go out and shoot a roll with it. I also vowed that I was going to take one of my Canonet QL17s with me and compare it shot-by-shot against the [...]
View Entire PostBefore I was a photographer I had a strange artistic hobby of drawing portraits of zombies. This was in the early 90s when I was between eleven and fourteen years od age, and was sparked after catching the Tom Savini remake of Night of the Living Dead on Cinemax late one night.
I made a [...]
When the snow is blowing sideways, and you can't see more then half a block down the road, what do you do? Sit inside and drink some egg nog next to the fireplace? Nah, how about busting out the flash and doing a little people photography? Sounds good to me!
I didn't get much from this [...]
View Entire PostBob was a guy who grew up in an orphanage and only knew a few people from his real family. Around 1995 he somehow ended up in our small town of 700 people, and my brother befriending him, and starting taking care of him. He quickly became one of the town characters and was loved [...]
View Entire PostToday I finally got to get some paper wet after doing the calibrations mentioned in this post. I've only ran one so far, but it is very exciting to see a strait print holding full shadow detail, and highlights, without having to do endless dodging and burning. I feel so liberated having a completely usable [...]

View Entire Post"Flash is usefull, but it can also pollute a photo. Your job as a photographer is to capture the vision of your subject that cannot be capture by a normal point of view. Some of the best photographers use no flash at all, but instead choose to use a better light gathering lens. They choose [...]

View Entire PostSomething that has never happened to me before happened tonight.
I was talking to a stranger, they noticed my camera and asked if I was a photographer. I said I was and there was a bit of small talk. eventually I pulled out one of my cards and handed it to her.
"Oh! You're K. Praslowicz. [...]
Today's topic: Sports Photography!
Wait? Don't I shoot film cameras that lack motor drives and 300mm lenses? Don't I use crazy contraptions that won't focus for me and often require me to stop shooting while I empty it? Yes! Yes I do! And I'm proud to say that I enjoy shooting sports with them.
I've come [...]
The images that I pick as my favorite from yesterday's shoot with slowly be filling up the Grandma's Marathon 2008 set at my Flickr account.
For now, the first two images I've deemed as keepers. More will trickle in as I process the film & images.
Seven hours of my feet.
18 photos with the Speed Graphic.
72 Photos with the 124G.
96 Color photos with my M3.
128 B&W photos with my M3.
Longest single outing I think I've ever had, and the first where I got to wear an actual badge saying "Official Photographer" and I'm surprisingly not as a sore as I expected. [...]
A simple Flickr tag once got me identified as Corey Feldman. Does he now want me dead?
View Entire PostIs 125 feet of film suitable attire for work? Probably not.
View Entire PostHere is my new fangled idea. I haven't made a contact sheet since 2000. I have an entire binder of pseudo organized 35mm negatives from that point to the present. I want to ultimately contact print everyone and put the contact print in a page right behind the set of negatives. Its really annoying having [...]

View Entire PostAbout fifteen minutes ago I was out doing some night photography with my Speed Graphic. The main part of the scene metered at 5:30 minutes exposure after factoring in reciprocity. The darkest parts that I wanted to register where pretty dark, so I needed to use my flash to build up some density.
I opened up [...]
Leica is sending a boatload of people to Duluth. Only, you wouldn't know that by the photos in the promotional material.
View Entire PostSo it seems that the course for third stage of the Duluth Classic Bike Race goes right in front of where I am living. I had no clue until about 9:30 this morning when I looked out of my front window and seen a massive swarm of bikes going past.
I loaded up some [...]
I'm just going to take a moment to share a video that absolutely love. Love Letter by Nick Cave. I pick this one to share here since the visuals presented throughout it show a strong relation to the type of scenes I often find myself hunting for. The scenes present throughout the video are those [...]
View Entire PostSo I went and picked up the first roll of slide film that I shot with my Yashicamat 124G today. It was from a twilight/night photography outing I did last week. I wasn't all that impressed with the light conditions that were present during dusk, and just as I suspected, none of the photos from [...]
View Entire PostSay hello to the newest member of my equipment line-up, Mr. Yaschicamat LM.
I picked it up this weekend at an estate sale that I crossed paths with while driving around looking for random garage sales. Everything appeared to be in great shape, and the price was right, so it has found itself a new loving [...]
I just packed up & shipped out the shutters for my 135mm & 90mm lenses to Flutot's Camera Repair. This is a good thing since as-is, they tend to not work at shutter speeds slower then 1/30th. Combine this with the fact that the focal plane shutter in my Speed Graphic hits a slowest speed [...]

View Entire PostIt is now mid August, and finally this part of the world is breeching 80°F with high humidity. And to tell the truth, these three days of summer we've had can go right back to hell. I want my winter back.
I hate heat, and I doubly hate humidity. I suppose that why I can live [...]
Yup. I've actually been shooting again. Even better, I actually have a workable darkroom again, so expect some new releases, and maybe some old stuff I never released, but should have.
Also expect a new website in the near future. This one is over four years old, and is a little bit tired.
Our heat wave has broken for now, yet I still have a craving for winter. The street photography is fun, but recently I've really wanted to resume work on my cold winter nights series that I started two years ago after I purchased Chris Faust's book Nocturnes and felt inspired to get myself out and [...]
View Entire PostLast Saturday I took a walk to the Tweed Museum of Arts. Among the works currently hanging on the walls was a print of Paul Strand's Wall Street, and two of Garry Winogrand's prints from his Women are Beautiful collection.
No big point here. Just that I didn't expect to stumble onto such works in a [...]
Whenever someone who has appeared in a photograph of mine dies, I get this feeling that the photo has been elevated a bit. Previously it was Old Bob. Before that it was Wesly Ngetich. Today, after reading the local news, it appears to be a duck named Boo Boo.

View Entire PostLast week I caught wind of an Iraq War protest being held a block away from where I work, and was conveniently starting right when I would be leaving the office. I grabbed my M3, a pocketful of hp5+, and attended the rally to do some rogue photojournalism.

Since I now have a few friends who have digital cameras and come on outings with me, I figure I can harvest some of their images and use them to create a journal of outings.

Remember the Yashicamat LM that I mentioned a few weeks back? Well, I went ahead and acquired a Yashicamat 124G as well, and last week I put it to some good use.
On Thursday I loaded it with some Provia 100F and stomped around the shores of Lake Superior at dusk to do some night photography. [...]
