The best mead I ever had was from Scotland back in the late 90's...Moniack Mead. It was said to be made of caramelized heather honey. It was not available in the US. I had a Canadian connection that would smuggle it in for me...6 bottles at a time.
Sadly most of the commercial mead made nowadays seems pretty crappy. Even the beers are not what they used to be. They can't seem to make decent, plain old beer any longer. It is all odd flavors and the plain beer that is made is pasteurized.
